Not So Blue Low-Sugar Blueberry Smoothie

When I first started my low fodmap diet, I kind of dropped the ball on the smoothies. I was having trouble figuring out what to fill them with. However, there's only so many days in a row I can eat variations of eggs + greens and an orange. So the question is, how do you build a tasty, nutrient dense smoothie when most fruits are out of the question, a whole banana as a base is not a good idea, and cauliflower is a no-no. It took my a few weeks to crack the code, but I now have not one but TWO new favorite smoothies in rotation. This one is filled with greens and chlorella. It's perfect for detoxing, which my gut is in major need of. Note when I say detoxing, I don't mean cutting back or "dieting," I simply mean including whole ingredients that have a detoxing effect on one's digestive system. This smoothie also has enough fiber and fat to keep you full, and enough sweetness and creaminess to feel like a real deal smoothie. Even if you are not practicing a low fodmap diet, I highly encourage you to try it for breakfast! 

Ingredients // Pantry List:

  • Unripe banana
  • Frozen wild blueberries
  • Frozen spinach
  • Frozen zucchini (cut in pieces)
  • Almond milk (or non-dairy milk of choice - always make sure to read the ingredients if you're not making it yourself)
  • Peanut butter (or nut//seed butter of choice)
  • Flaxseed meal
  • Maca powder
  • Chlorella powder
  • Topping of choice


  • Add the following ingredients to your blender: 1/2 an unripe banana, 3/4 cup frozen wild blueberries, 1/2 cup frozen spinach, about 1 zucchini cut in pieces (this can be fresh or frozen), 1 cup almond milk, 1 heaping tablespoon peanut butter, 1 tablespoons flaxseed meal, 1 teaspoons maca powder, 1 teaspoon chlorella
  • Blend, blend, blend
  • Optional: add ice if needed and blend again
  • Serve in one tall glass (will make about 16oz)
  • Top with add-ons of choice, I used hemp seeds

I have noticed such a huge difference using unripe bananas vs. ripe bananas in my smoothie. If you are suffering from gut issues or simply trying to lower your sugar intake, unripe bananas (in moderation) can be a good swap. Hope this smoothie blasts any of your low sugar diet blues away. Enjoy!
