Where'd you get that?

Helllllo friend! If you follow me on Instagram, you knew this post was coming (or even asked me for it yourself). I'm about to spill all of the no whey secrets to grocery shopping...which is low key one of my favorite activities ever. Every once in a while, especially after I went back to 9 to 5 work life, I have the thought that I should hop on the good eggs // amazon fresh train and not waste time visiting the grocery store or the farmers market, because there are only so many hours in the day, you know? But then I remember that food shopping is most literally therapy for me. There is something about roaming the aisles of the grocery store and reading ingredient labels that just does it for me. I'm weird, I know. In addition to the therapeutic component, I also think there is nothing like choosing your own produce//meat and learning about where it came from. It gives you an appreciation for your food that you would never have otherwise.

I currently live in SF right smack in between probably the best grocery stores in Northern California. Birite, Rainbow Coop, Guss' Community Market, and Whole Foods are all within walking distance from the No Whey loft and me, Nic, and the pup typically hit a local farmers market on Sunday as part of our weekend routine.

Farmer's Market

  • Whatever produce is in season!
  • As many greens as possible
  • Avocados if they have them
  • Fish (if we get their early before the crowd picks through it)

Rainbow Coop:

  • As much of my produce as possible - especially if I miss the farmers market (it's all organic, predominantly local, and a great place for finding tropical food year-round // the only place I know of that ever has organic plantains). Typically pick up the following here:
    • Oranges // Grapefruit // Persimmons // Pears // Grapes // Figs - dependant on season
    • Bananas // Plantains
    • Kale // Chard // Collards // Zucchini // Carrots // Green Beans // Micro Greens // Bell Pepper // Eggplant // Sweet potato // Squash // peppers // herbs // onions // garlic // ginger
  • Bulk bin nuts
  • Bulk bin rice (usually Lundberg brown basmati)
  • Bulk bin dried fruit
  • Bulk bin anything really (they literally have it all including giant vats of nut butter from your usually PB to pistachio to walnut)
  • Kalamatas from the olive bar (organic and they aren't soaked in white vinegar -- I like them with the pits still in them)
  • "Stirs the Soul" brand chocolate
  • Bread SRSLY
  • Nut butter packs (more choices here than at whole foods)
  • Bitchin' Sauce (WF now carries this)
  • Variety of hummus (usually the hummus guy, but they carry new spreads frequently)
  • Hodo Extra Firm Tofu
  • Hodo Thai Curry Tofu Nuggets
  • Kombucha (usually GTs gingerade, sometimes healthade)
  • Urban Remedy Juice // Salads (WF now carries this, too)
  • Pasture Raised Eggs (if I'm not buying at the farmers market)
  • Eden Organic Apple Cider Based Mustard
  • Happy Pho Noodle Kit
  • truRoots Sprouted Quinoa
  • "Petruz Fruity" brand Frozen Acai Packs
  • Lydia's cashew cheeze collard wraps
  • Sonoma something spring rolls
  • Smoothie Supps (chia seeds, maca powder, flax meal, ashwaganda, etc.)

Whole Foods:

  • Product that's cheaper at WF than Rainbow
    • Avocados
    • Lemons
    • Boxed greens (arugula, mache rosettes, etc.)
    • Broccolini
  • Raw proteins (I try to purchase step 3+) -- Mary's Organic Chicken, Atkins Lamb from New Zealand (they don't grain finish), Diestel Ground Organic Turkey (the frozen one, it doesn't contain vinegar), ground bison or frozen bison burger patties, fish (only if it's fresh and wild)
  • La Quercia Ridgetop Proscuitto
  • Whole Foods brands wild smoked salmon
  • Crown Prince wild caught sardines canned in olive oil
  • Tonnino Tuna
  • Frozen cauliflower rice
  • Frozen spinach
  • Frozen fruits (usually blueberries and raspberries)
  • Hilary's Veggie Burgers
  • Premade bone broth (first choice "Butcher's Bone Broth," second choice "Bonafide," third choice "Pacific Foods")
  • Rice cakes (either Lundberg's brown rice thin stackers or edwards and son's unsalted brown rice cracker snaps)
  • Siete Foods Almond Flour Tortillas
  • Braggs Nutritional Yeast + Apple Cider Vinegar
  • "easyIndian" Authentic Tikka Masala Spice Pack
  • Dried spices
  • O Sherry Vinegar
  • Jovial brown rice pasta (fusilli is my favorite!)
  • Jovial jarred tomatoes
  • Tea (Yogi Green Tea, Traditional Medicine's Chamomile tea and Sleepy Tea, any Rooibos or Chai that is on sale with no additives)
  • Pascha chocolate
  • Go Raw buckwheat granola
  • Plantain chips

  • Raw pork (usually for pulled pork)

Guss' Community Market

  • Anything I missed // run out of throughout the week
